The twelve apostles were some of the earliest followers of Jesus Christ. Most of them died as martyrs for their faith, with the exception of Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus and committed suicide. Peter was crucified upside down at his request since he did not feel worthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. Paul was beheaded, Philip was tortured and impaled by iron hooks in his ankles before being hung upside down to die, and James was executed with a sword by King Herod. Thomas is believed to have been killed with a spear, while Andrew is said to have been martyred on an X-shaped cross. The other apostles died in various ways such as stoning or crucifixion.
