St Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, celebrated on St Andrew’s Day (30th November). He was an apostle of Jesus and is believed to have been martyred by crucifixion. Legends vary, but it is thought that his remains were brought to Scotland in the 8th century. He has become a symbol of Scottish identity and is also the patron saint of singers, spinsters, maidens, fishmongers, fishermen, women wanting to be mothers, gout and sore throats.
